South Gippsland Genealogical Society

Our monthly activities so far this year have been a talk about the anniversary of the Norfolk Island to Hobart migration in 1807 and an indexing night. We are looking forward to the first Saturday afternoon meeting on 14th June at 1.30 pm which is at the Municipal Library and will be devoted to exploring genealogical sites on the Internet. Anyone is welcome to attend as a guest for a fee of $5.

Our major commitment for the first half of this year has been the VAFHO Conference at Inverloch from 2-4 May which was attended by over 200 people. We undertook to assist the VAFHO Committee with this Conference by providing information on venues, accommodation, etc., and organizing the setting up of the rooms and the catering. The speakers were excellent and covered a large range of topics. Many reported that they had learned a great deal about how to further their family research. The social events went smoothly and many were pleased to be able to chat and compare notes with other enthusiasts.

We were pleased and somewhat relieved that our part of the weekend went well. This could not have been achieved without the support and hard work of our members, as it was a considerable commitment. We were also fortunate to have the assistance of members’ families and friends to ease the work load. Our thanks to all who helped us in any way and especially to Alison and Joan who did the lion’s share of the organising over many months. It was good to have an event like this in our local area and we hope that everyone from our Society who was able to come enjoyed the experience.

We are located in the Mechanics’ Institute, McCartin Street, Leongatha (beside the Memorial Hall).

Our postal address is PO Box 395, Leongatha, 3953.
